Quotes of the Night

I arrived home just in time on Saturday evening to celebrate my beautiful aunt's 40th Birthday at Gasthof Old Bavarian restaurant (more about that later) and after coming back to our place for cake and ice cream, we began a sporadic game of Catch Phrase. For those of you that have never played... I think the simplest definition would be a cross between Taboo and Hot Potato.

I just had to share my favourite quotes of the night:

"It's what you put in the toaster"
"TOAST!"

"It's what you watch when you get older"
"TV" (actual answer: blood pressure")

"4 words for drool"
(I still don't know the answer to this one. I think we were laughing too hard)

Happy Valentine's Day!

Maybe I'm just a little weird, but I actually usually don't get too depressed around Valentine's Day... maybe it's because I've already received the best valentine a gal could ever ask for :)

Adventures with Emily - Part 1a

Just thought I should fill you in on two little events from my day:

Well Gertie's door latch froze again :( I decided to try the other door to try to see what the latch was suppose to look like and ended up locking that one too! I tried to get them shut but realized that I was already late for class and I left them open
for 3 classes (don't worry I did remember to shut off the indoor lights). 3.5 hours later, I made my way to security to tell my sob story and buddy helped me out. It seems like everyone knows what I'm talking about when I explain my problem. Something that shocked me though was the fact that the same man that upholds the "law" by giving me parking tickets, told me I didn't have to put on my seat belt while he drove us up the hill. He reasoned that my actions were based solely on habit. It was a good thing he was such a nice guy to help me out or I think I would have given a lecture on safety :)

Since the new semester, I have had to change my gym schedule and now go to Curves after school rather than before. I missed some of the ladies, but today one of them was there at 3. It was such a nice surprise and to top it off, before she left she came to check if I still had mismatching socks. It's pretty crazy when you are defined by your socks!

Grooveshark

Ok, so I have a new found love and I thought i would share with all you lovelies!

Before Christmas, a friend introduced me to Grooveshark. I'm not sure if I have just been out of the loop and that all of you already know about this wonderful site or not, but you need to check it out. At first I tried it out for a few Christmas carols, but I didn't catch on to it until recently and now I'm hooked!

It's basically an online (no downloading) music search engine and music streaming site. It's super easy to use (hey, I can even use it) and it's absolutely free (no sign up required) :) It works for songs old (ol' Blue eyes himself etc...), new and less known (ie. has a decent amount of Christian music, which is a major + !)

"Once you find something you like, you can add it to your playlist by clicking the plus sign. In most cases, album art is fetched automatically. Grooveshark allows you to add, skip, repeat, shuffle, reorder and remove songs in your playlist as you see fit. Much like its rival Pandora (which isn't available in Canada), Grooveshark lets you create radio stations by having it select songs that sound similar to the ones you picked yourself. Making a new radio station is simple: add a few songs to the playlist and hit the Radio button. Grooveshark will then start adding new songs to your playlist while you listen. There is no limit on how many songs you can skip per hour."-

So basically, this is my new cd player/radio/itunes... hope you'll enjoy it as much as I have!

Let me know what you think :D

What's in your hand?

I began reading in Exodus not too long ago and have really been enjoying it! For those who say that the OT is "unpractical", I beg to differ! I've been struck (not literally) by Moses' staff and its many uses throughout his whole life: its connection with the plagues, its stretching out over the Red Sea, its lifting in the battle with the Amalekites, among many others...

I was reading in Exodus 4, which is the scene of Moses and the burning bush and his calling by God to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. As God tried to prepare him for the work, Moses felt inadequate and doubtful and God's response was: "What is in your hand?" (Ex. 4:20) The mighty God of the universe chose to prove to Moses his power and might by the use of a simple staff. The same is true with us. God is molding us for a special work for Himself and he simply asks us: "What is in your hand?" Now for Moses, it was a staff, probably one he used for his
day-to-day job of shepherding, which teaches me a principle that God wants to use the everyday tools that are already in my life, not spectacular, miraculous ones. He has already equipped me, I just need to be available and ready to trust God for whatever work he has for me to do :)

Later on Moses recognizes the same staff as an instrument of God by referring to it as "the staff of God" (Ex. 4:20). Moses' perspective has changed now that he has witnessed the powerful signs done by his staff. I may have specific talents, money, ambition,
material possessions and time that God has given me. Do I see them as just something from this life or as not my own but a means for God to work through me? I need to have perspective that they have been entrusted to me as part of a stewardship.

So now the question is: what's in your hand?!

Hope you enjoyed these little, simple thoughts. Have a good rest of your week :)

Stewardship

Last weekend was an awesome conference here in Halifax by Andrew Ussher. The topic was "Stewardship and the Believer - Dealing with things that don't belong to me" with the outline:

Principles of Stewardship
Stewardship of Time
Stewardship of Money - Serving God or Serving Money?
Stewardship of My Body - Remaining Pure in an Impure World
Stewardship of Money - Laying Up Treasures in Heaven
The Local Assembly
Stewardship of the Truth
Q&A Session

It is definitely worth your time to check it out. You can listen here online.

Above is a pic of the beautiful ladies that I had the pleasure of spending my weekend with.
I love my sisters and am thankful for them! :)

Have a great weekend! I'm off to Sussex Days meeting.

Sweet Deal!

Alright, so yesterday I mentioned that when my parents were down we made a few shopping stops. One of which was at Michaels. Now this actually made me quite excited as I love to do post-Christmas supply shopping for the next year. What I didn't know was how amazing the deals would be... all Christmas-ware was 90% off!!!! And the best part? There was an entire bin full of ribbon! I LOVE ribbon so there was much rejoicing! Mom and I met another woman who informed us of another bonus that all purchases made today were an additional 25% off! So I eventually picked out a bunch of ribbon (about a third is pictured above as I sent the Christmas-y looking ribbon home with mom). Mom herself hid away in the decoration section where she chose floral pieces to form a beautiful brown and gold Christmas arrangement! I also found a package of cards that came to a mere 8 cents. Grand total of our purchase (and there was a lot), wait for it....... $25!!!!! Like when does one find gorgeous ribbon usually 10$ for 99cents with another 25% off that again?!
So take home message of the day? You gotta love a deal ;)

It wasn't just the groundhog that was hibernating...

I just wanted to confirm that I am alive but have been a bit occupied over the last weekend with a event to be posted later on. As for right now, here are the events from last weekend when mom and dad came to visit :)
We had a wonderful visit and I felt quite selfish and special when they drove through that nasty Friday storm to make it to Halifax. We just relaxed and visited and dad quickly bonded with the kids, especially Ellen. He gave a sneak-peek of being a granddad, although it will be a long time before then ;)

The next morning, Esther made a fabulous breakfast and then we headed off to the market. Mmmm... I love the market and don't go near enough, so it was great to be able to visit the "new" location with mom and dad. It's a very different layout from the old one, but still wasn't too much of a disappointment. We found some yummy goodies and of course dad saw someone he knew (this will never cease to amaze me!)

We originally were planning to skate on the Oval (created for the 2011 Canada Games to be held in just over a week) , but the absolutely freezing weather conditions proved that we were wimps and we skipped out. We decided to visit the Hydrostone Market instead. I have been dying to take mom and dad there since I originally had a custom text created at Rusty Hinges for mom's 50th. Then after a few shopping stops and a nap, we met up with Marilyn and Reuben who were in town for a wedding show and Reuben's cousin Lauren at my favourite Greek restaurant in Halifax: Opa.

Mom and dad stuck around for Sunday and we headed over to Dartmouth for lunch at mom's university friend (and a third of the reason of my middle name) Heather's home. It was great visiting with the kids too who I can't believe how old they are getting! After Gospel meeting we enjoyed some time with the Morton's with yummy goodies included. Monday morning seemed to come so quickly, but Sussex day's meeting is coming up in a few weeks so I'll be able to see mommy and daddy again soon :)
